The retreat coordinator asked me to make table number signs for the small groups that included watercolors and lettering. While the little one was napping, I made these table numbers using <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Tombow-Brush-Markers-Bright-10-Pack/dp/B00JVB8FBA">Tombow brush markers</a> and watercolors.<br />

<div style="position: relative;">
The past 6 weeks of motherhood have flown by, and not only has our sweet baby girl changed my daily routine (or lack thereof!), she's also inadvertently caused me to rearrange my living room. Visiting friends have joked about how our Snug-a-Monkey baby swing has become part of the permanent living room furniture arrangement.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.arhaus.com/">Arhaus </a>recently contacted me to imagine my dream living room. They have a location in North Carolina and I enjoyed browsing through their <a href="https://www.arhaus.com/furniture/living-room-furniture/">living room options</a>. The key words that come to mind for my style are: modern, neutral, and classic, with a touch of gold. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My current living room has a similar ottoman that I reupholstered and added tufting to (tutorial coming soon!), a similar futon, and the exact rug from RugsUSA. In real life my futon has many more than 3 pillows...if you ask my husband he will tell you that I have a real pillow problem! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Armchair: </b>I've been on the hunt for an armchair since we moved into this townhouse a few years ago. I love the clean lines of this chair, and the wood easel back adds such great character! It doesn't hurt that this chair was made by North Carolinians. The fabric looks easy to clean which is a major plus now that we have a little one in the house.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Accent pieces: </b>With such neutral colored furniture, the side table and standing lamp add a little bit of drama with their bronze and gold accents. I especially love how the side table creates visual interest with its round shape and geometric sides. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Greenery</b>: I'm working on developing a green thumb, such as the succulent above that I've been propagating. In the meantime this artificial fiddle leaf fig plant adds a bit of color and breathes oxygen into the living area without requiring any watering or maintenance.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>TV stand:</b> Who knew that Walmart has affordable furniture finds like this <a href="https://www.walmart.com/ip/Accentuations-by-Manhattan-Comfort-Salem-Splayed-Leg-TV-Stand-in-White/120575416?u1=cee3964bfc124441ba4b22cda802ae06&oid=223073.1&wmlspartner=Hy3bqNL2jtQ&sourceid=16360849583473129146&affillinktype=10&veh=aff">TV stand</a>? I liked the modern legs and the functionality of the cabinets and shelves for storing our favorite board games and DVDs, providing easy access when we had guests over to play Settlers of Catan.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This project helped me realize that I prefer classic furniture pieces that provide a neutral palette backdrop for the DIY wall decor that I currently have, like the <a href="http://doleenoted.blogspot.com/2015/06/diy-wooden-bicycle-sign-with.html">bicycle pallet sign</a> that I made for our mantel or the <a href="http://doleenoted.blogspot.com/2016/03/calligraphy-with-quilling-and-weekend.html">framed calligraphy</a> hanging on the wall. When I get the itch to redecorate, it will be easy to switch up the throw pillows or the wall art.<br />

As they patiently went through the long process of paperwork and logistics, I had some time to make a quilled lion for his nursery art. It took me awhile to find a lion that didn't look too fierce! I didn't want his wall art to give him nightmares overnight.<br />

I framed the quilled lion with a shadowbox frame and it's now hanging in sweet Aslan's room! It was just a small way for me to celebrate with our friends when they were finally able to bring Aslan home. I hope this quilled lion can remind him of the year he became part of his new family and how deeply they love him.</div>

I've always loved the look of marble and recently discovered that there is such a thing as <a href="https://www.amazon.com/DC-Fix-346-0047-Adhesive-Marble/dp/B006NYDQJE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1490062361&sr=8-1&keywords=marble+contact+paper+dc">marble contact paper</a>. Who knew?! You can get the look of polished marble for an affordable price of $7, and it's not as heavy as a real marble slab. I'm not saying I would stick this paper all over my kitchen or bathroom counters but for smaller decor items like this breakfast tray, this contact paper was perfect.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I found this tray at a thrift store and knew I wanted to spruce it up and repaint it. I had some gold spray paint in my garage (because you never know when you might need it!) and sprayed the handles and corner hardware with a few coats and let it air dry. </div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Finally, the last step was to measure out the contact paper, unpeel the backing, and carefully smooth it into place. The nice thing about contact paper is that if you need to readjust after already pressing the paper down into place, it's easy to lift and redo it so that it fits perfectly. This is definitely a 2-person job because I used a credit card to smooth out the bubbles while my husband held the paper in place.</div>

A brand new tray with a marble interior! I've actually been using it in the nursery to corral baby essentials like diapers, wipes, pacifiers, etc.</div>

We'll see how long she tolerates wearing one when I put it on her head before she figures out how to pull it off.<div>

<div>
<b><a name='more'></a></b></div>
<div>
<b>Materials needed:</b></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Felt in various colors (I chose purple, pink, white, and yellow)</li>
<li>Scissors</li>
<li>Hot glue gun</li>
<li>Skinny elastic (available at any craft store like Michaels)</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFNluHvCyOIx4HAQLC9melpqxS5ZuuNEJa9WNqQiwVSZYrrNe3pwZ2_i5DYDVQuOwyurqB43ljBoBYK1-YNK8Z3DEllsaDKvnTLym1WhuUkii82stkBdLQgazDaBbzTacngy4TxN1UCnE/s1600/Felt+baby+girl+floral+headband+collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFNluHvCyOIx4HAQLC9melpqxS5ZuuNEJa9WNqQiwVSZYrrNe3pwZ2_i5DYDVQuOwyurqB43ljBoBYK1-YNK8Z3DEllsaDKvnTLym1WhuUkii82stkBdLQgazDaBbzTacngy4TxN1UCnE/s640/Felt+baby+girl+floral+headband+collage.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. Cut elastic into desired length--I chose to make mine 15 inches long. I used this baby head circumference guide:</div>
<div>
<div>
<i>Newborn: 12-13.5 inches </i></div>
<div>
<i>0-1 years: 14.5 inches</i></div>
<div>
<i>1-6 years: 15.5 inches</i></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2. Place small dot of glue using the hot glue gun to make a loop with the elastic by overlapping the ends.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3. Cut felt into flowers. I used this <a href="http://www.craftinessisnotoptional.com/2015/08/felt-flower-tutorial-and-free-pattern.html" target="_blank">free template</a> for the larger flowers with yellow centers. For the smaller flowers I used this<a href="http://www.mediafire.com/file/61oe6sq7udsbsmt/Christmas+Headband.pdf" target="_blank"> template </a>from the <a href="http://mama-says-sew.blogspot.com/2014/12/christmas-headband-tutorial-and-pattern.html"><span id="goog_692111528"></span>Mama Says Sew blog<span id="goog_692111529"></span></a>. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
4. Hot glue the flowers onto the elastic (cover up the overlapping areas where you made the elastic into a loop). </div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuISVAxeON_gGDDVjWP9aeOY2SqBZaJV6kxOwV_EAYEhTXZpHIzuZLFAfH6lrb-7vK3haAfDMqBKRBIyLnN4IAlZxdSMvAkct-Rt5ce934fjJqhybY5gDJaFNAXjh8sTR_mCuUc49DkQk/s1600/Felt+baby+girl+floral+headband+%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="444" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuISVAxeON_gGDDVjWP9aeOY2SqBZaJV6kxOwV_EAYEhTXZpHIzuZLFAfH6lrb-7vK3haAfDMqBKRBIyLnN4IAlZxdSMvAkct-Rt5ce934fjJqhybY5gDJaFNAXjh8sTR_mCuUc49DkQk/s640/Felt+baby+girl+floral+headband+%25282%2529.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And just like that---three pretty floral headbands for baby girl! Rolling the felt into the flowers was probably the most time-consuming part of this project. You can speed up the process by buying pre-made silk flowers and gluing them onto the elastic.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After my coworker saw the floral headbands she requested an elastic bowtie for her baby boy. The materials are the same as the ones needed for the baby girl headbands.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-zuLnl1uZiva1oAI1MILuT6O2fxFi4fHqMUqzROGv9D5TQ7pIl4iMNnY_VPQIlMrDFNz9DUv00thxB5M5JLhkwZ_U6ibpiWXXrfCTyrVLEP44mQ7F2XxC88XDxR_k9Cxi7iOjB0oVoak/s1600/felt+baby+bowtie+collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-zuLnl1uZiva1oAI1MILuT6O2fxFi4fHqMUqzROGv9D5TQ7pIl4iMNnY_VPQIlMrDFNz9DUv00thxB5M5JLhkwZ_U6ibpiWXXrfCTyrVLEP44mQ7F2XxC88XDxR_k9Cxi7iOjB0oVoak/s640/felt+baby+bowtie+collage.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNTkln9yTsAPkQcdBNFfu3yZ9c7H1g4axr5ggXln7lgYnXwEstF7Ms7c2uwryRD83Wof7AEPKPqaY_1Prv0NBtcIAjfhjZQRHDQwf1F6tKka2CPPau5EJEOUicLzUzTXZjUcH3HzUs0Dk/s1600/felt+baby+bowtie+elastic+%25284%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNTkln9yTsAPkQcdBNFfu3yZ9c7H1g4axr5ggXln7lgYnXwEstF7Ms7c2uwryRD83Wof7AEPKPqaY_1Prv0NBtcIAjfhjZQRHDQwf1F6tKka2CPPau5EJEOUicLzUzTXZjUcH3HzUs0Dk/s640/felt+baby+bowtie+elastic+%25284%2529.jpg" width="457" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. Cut felt into a 6 inch by 2 inch rectangle. Also cut a felt strip that is 1 inch by 2 inches (this will be the middle piece)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Cut elastic into desired length (I chose to cut it 10 inches to fit a baby boy's neck circumference/shirt collar). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Fold felt rectangle in half so that it becomes 3 inches by 2 inches. Sew the ends together and flip it inside out so that the seam faces inwards</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. Pinch rectangle and wrap the 1'' x 2'' piece of felt around the middle. Hot glue this middle piece so that it holds the bow securely in this shape</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. Thread the elastic through the loop in the back. Or just hot glue the bow directly onto the elastic. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I can't wait to see my baby wearing the headband, and my friend's baby wearing his little bowtie!</div>

I debated for a LONG time what to make for the baby's nursery mobile and wall decor because being married to an ophthalmologist resident means that we are hypervigilant about preventing eye injuries. We ruled out sharp pointy objects to give my husband some peace that even if something fell onto our poor baby, it wouldn't cause an open globe.<br />
<br />
This floral mobile with soft silk flowers and a styrofoam base fit the bill and earned my husband's approval for baby safety!<br />
<br />
Read on for the full tutorial!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Materials needed:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.michaels.com/styrofoam-floral-wreath-round-face%2C-white/10585513.html#q=styrofoam+wreath&start=2" target="_blank">12 inch styrofoam wreath form</a></li>
<li>Wide ribbon--I cut 2 pieces that were 120 inches each, to hang about 60 inches down from the ceiling </li>
<li>Tape</li>
<li>silk/artificial flowers (available at Hobby Lobby/Michaels/Joanns/any craft store, or even the dollar store or Walmart)</li>
<li>ceiling hook</li>
<li>gold spray paint (optional)</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6uFbomlDziuFjan9VX3aVRsPNCqRNb4iIaSi9Qnl0ju6_VMTQMgvY39M-JuOHbKj6ES4a8QGMRC5aiXX9ywuwup1T4TM1L_fsz8JqKXEfkGfn0u9X6w3l4RwVhnBWOUw4A3FSzSOTVX4/s1600/floral+nusery+mobile+tutorial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6uFbomlDziuFjan9VX3aVRsPNCqRNb4iIaSi9Qnl0ju6_VMTQMgvY39M-JuOHbKj6ES4a8QGMRC5aiXX9ywuwup1T4TM1L_fsz8JqKXEfkGfn0u9X6w3l4RwVhnBWOUw4A3FSzSOTVX4/s640/floral+nusery+mobile+tutorial.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Spray paint the styrofoam wreath gold, then use tape to secure the 2 long pieces of ribbon in a crisscross, wrapping under and around the wreath form. I ended up switching to clear packing tape because I didn't like how the masking tape looked from underneath.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4m2qQp7GzEe73xsAt2oEqg3v0F1hIQn4ixMpR8o930-tcMsQQp3kLul3Z-lpiPM7oweeJiJCVmkBh5_hiNGIGvLrmMeVksjP9z9IPR9_wFBUGKWLnurnst0gpjZIKOcFBB9WVrFfqbpM/s1600/IMG_8478.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4m2qQp7GzEe73xsAt2oEqg3v0F1hIQn4ixMpR8o930-tcMsQQp3kLul3Z-lpiPM7oweeJiJCVmkBh5_hiNGIGvLrmMeVksjP9z9IPR9_wFBUGKWLnurnst0gpjZIKOcFBB9WVrFfqbpM/s640/IMG_8478.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
Insert the stems of the pink carnations and cream roses into the wreath. I alternated pink and cream so that the baby can see some of the flowers from underneath the mobile.<br />

I twisted the ribbon and secured it with a twisty-tie onto a 3M command hook and pressed it into the ceiling. So far it's held up really well and securely! Now baby has something pretty to look at when she's laying in the crib :)</div>

To make this card, I used the Cricut to cut out the baby carriage out of one of my favorite scrapbook patterned papers: purple polka dots! Perfect for a sweet baby girl. The little pink heart is quilled and I bought the little butterfly scrapbook embellishment in a pack.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I co-hosted a baby shower this weekend and it was so delightful to celebrate a dear friend Bekah from my church! She is naming her daughter Elsa after her grandmother (and also happens to be a Disney princess now ;) ). I've been loving the combination of watercolor and calligraphy and also made a birthday card for my bff. Read on to see the framed quilled nursery decor that I made for Bekah!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpmYddlrSF77Tcx2lMpT-oeejejkVbUhc4b1cFaNnGhcc0AuLp2MSwLKAFUxldPjFfuoPtel2TuXm1JRH_mwhZl5VBC0SnUgd0fuxoCCvrB0x83Mkme7TzqX9kV4J6BQ0rGikD1xod6cQ/s1600/IMG_5867.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpmYddlrSF77Tcx2lMpT-oeejejkVbUhc4b1cFaNnGhcc0AuLp2MSwLKAFUxldPjFfuoPtel2TuXm1JRH_mwhZl5VBC0SnUgd0fuxoCCvrB0x83Mkme7TzqX9kV4J6BQ0rGikD1xod6cQ/s400/IMG_5867.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For Bekah's baby shower gift I quilled her name and framed it. Elsa's nursery is lavender and mint so I tried to match their other decor. First I sketched out her name in pencil.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiD2XQ2ifHMh7KZpaB8-puAP8ek7R8vZ105Z773X1qwcGE_0hd-az1_wxs56z-jS2B11FoguZ1HQmXXhXRWc71MWnRLW1doRgIKmwGMibMub748GIV26dxc_AdPwMyLefqPnKYQD9r6dI/s1600/IMG_5873.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiD2XQ2ifHMh7KZpaB8-puAP8ek7R8vZ105Z773X1qwcGE_0hd-az1_wxs56z-jS2B11FoguZ1HQmXXhXRWc71MWnRLW1doRgIKmwGMibMub748GIV26dxc_AdPwMyLefqPnKYQD9r6dI/s400/IMG_5873.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then outlined it in purple cardstock.</div>

A few months ago I was standing in line at a craft supply store when I met Krista, of <a href="http://kristamollphotography.com/" target="_blank">Krista Moll Photography</a>. She was holding a stack of blank brown paper bags, and since the line was about 40 people long, I asked her what she was using them for. Her answer: a tea tasting event! I was intrigued. Turns out that Krista recently started conducting <a href="https://www.facebook.com/durhamteaplus/?fref=ts" target="_blank">tea tasting events</a> paired with yoga, and was planning a tea + pottery event! I started following her on Instagram and the rest is history. </div>

<span style="text-align: left;">We met up with Steph of </span><a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/JuniperAndLace" style="text-align: left;" target="_blank">Juniper & Lace</a><span style="text-align: left;"> and Krista to make a paper flower garland for the tea + pottery event and I really enjoyed working with such creative and kind people. These flowers were pretty easy to make, but took a cumulative 5-6 hours to make so many of them! We cut scrapbook paper circles, then cut a spiral from the outside in, leaving a small dot in the center to glue the spirals onto. Hold in place a few minutes with the glue and you have a 3-dimensional paper "rose"! </span></div>

They ended up looking really pretty strung up with twine in the wooden picnic shelter at Eno River state park for the pottery event.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At the tea tasting and pottery event, Krista and some other experienced potters walked us through the process of building our mug from a slab of clay, while we sipped on 6 different types of teas. Tea + working with my hands + Eno River State Park= a very relaxing Saturday indeed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9itX44ycLtEsJ7_ADjyxXQnbeH_JUUnh1ufsLfnvIIuEmskQy9TLbyERUb6kNbLlhc8tBrXHVDbMfzyr5HdQT5aMosi_hDqQhIA5kHmTEFTPTUPKqVhJ92R7MiYpiZuBcE4-5lDAw_d4/s1600/DIY+pottery+tea+collage+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9itX44ycLtEsJ7_ADjyxXQnbeH_JUUnh1ufsLfnvIIuEmskQy9TLbyERUb6kNbLlhc8tBrXHVDbMfzyr5HdQT5aMosi_hDqQhIA5kHmTEFTPTUPKqVhJ92R7MiYpiZuBcE4-5lDAw_d4/s320/DIY+pottery+tea+collage+3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">First we rolled out our slab of clay and cut out a rectangular shape, and shaved off a diagonal slice from opposite ends. </span>At this point I pressed a piece of lace and a stamp into my clay to make a design. Others also used leaves and larger stamped quotes. It's important to press the lace/stamp firmly so that it shows up after the clay dries.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihSosBnmxaFOXbTJZcseKsJ0bogZ41Y-UmvgsI_nLTde_RPmMOEwMHRmKfsb_pdDqtxTdTRQq32QF_yMjFDl_bAskCs6p8WrhahyphenhyphenGG2VQBdgC6ulJ0TGSMnURTtR3iVzjuBXlXD8hX9IA/s1600/DIY+pottery+tea+collage+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihSosBnmxaFOXbTJZcseKsJ0bogZ41Y-UmvgsI_nLTde_RPmMOEwMHRmKfsb_pdDqtxTdTRQq32QF_yMjFDl_bAskCs6p8WrhahyphenhyphenGG2VQBdgC6ulJ0TGSMnURTtR3iVzjuBXlXD8hX9IA/s320/DIY+pottery+tea+collage+4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">Then we scored the ends with a needle tool with tiny cross-hatch lines. We gently put the ends together so that the rectangle is now a cylinder (this sounds like a geometry class). </span></div>
Next, we pinched the bottom of the cylinder into 3 pointy legs and smoothed it out. On the side of the cup, we smoothed out the edges with a flat tool. I put a little triangular piece of clay to cover up the hole at the bottom and then smoothed it out so that the bottom is continuous.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy8kl5pwRjyY4Zt931xTy9Gtpkc3IQ1TiI8JenNFld9r1fCGEaZdjoldmUGQyZ8GBsQwkCFzNkqssmiUwhXriMm_BBBEV3ObQCN6fGlqrRHO1JFgLPvR-WmMczplckRlNvfZxOvfl5LD0/s1600/DIY+pottery+tea+collage+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy8kl5pwRjyY4Zt931xTy9Gtpkc3IQ1TiI8JenNFld9r1fCGEaZdjoldmUGQyZ8GBsQwkCFzNkqssmiUwhXriMm_BBBEV3ObQCN6fGlqrRHO1JFgLPvR-WmMczplckRlNvfZxOvfl5LD0/s320/DIY+pottery+tea+collage+5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally, the handle! I cut a narrow strip of clay, rounded it (with lots of help from the teacher), scored it with little cross-hatch marks and then attached it to the side of the mug.</div>

One with perfect bones, a light grey color. I decided to give this tan wingback armchair (gifted by a neighbor cleaning out their shed) a makeover. Although I've sewn a new cover for a square-shaped ottoman before, I decided that sewing a cover for this wingback chair was one DIY project that I did not feel up to, despite watching countless tutorial videos.<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Instead, I decided to paint the chair instead to give it a new look. First, I cleaned the chair thoroughly with a spray bottle filled with water, dishwashing soap, and vinegar, scrubbing carefully with a brush, and then I cleaned it with vodka, which removes odors and is a trick that many professional upholstery stores use. I let it air dry in the 98 degree Durham heat and then set to work painting!</div>

Before and after applying chalky paint!</div>

Materials needed:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>spray bottle filled with water</li>
<li>paintbrush. I also used a foam brush for painting the chair legs with black acrylic paint</li>
<li>2 jars (8 ounces each) of grey chalky paint (I used <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Americana-Chalky-Finish-8-Ounce-Yesteryear/dp/B00HO03EO8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1471225176&sr=8-1&keywords=americana+yesteryear" target="_blank">Americana Decor Yesteryear</a> from Michaels)</li>
<li>sandpaper--any type</li>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUi7yzrOlNYsRtpYCNvbLwkyQ6Qz1jHQT8OBqT02MTcuVgVEovyVkeCZvGzSmhc-5qeaCbxdg1OKNsIyEKo5oigVr9cpXRRVQuyINNsv5cdvvJNhVUOpFf5gFSa6xdddRxN60cHDtRjdg/s1600/Chalky+paint+chair1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="512" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUi7yzrOlNYsRtpYCNvbLwkyQ6Qz1jHQT8OBqT02MTcuVgVEovyVkeCZvGzSmhc-5qeaCbxdg1OKNsIyEKo5oigVr9cpXRRVQuyINNsv5cdvvJNhVUOpFf5gFSa6xdddRxN60cHDtRjdg/s640/Chalky+paint+chair1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Spray fabric with water, enough to dampen the fabric, then apply chalky paint. I removed the seat cushion and painted all sides of it as well.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZTbHel_HuhY64zMyx3UoJSrpzeXwEyF17Mbtk3DkyjtbIl7s-bI-sd6Cc1P2-efFo3mbwPFrh7iZRIWEkSnRGEG-3OUhaB9_JCzvrcJJLD5qNz-n4s8PYYHq4jS27fjgUS6n0PxivYpI/s1600/Chalky+paint+upholstered+chair+grey+wingback+%25284%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZTbHel_HuhY64zMyx3UoJSrpzeXwEyF17Mbtk3DkyjtbIl7s-bI-sd6Cc1P2-efFo3mbwPFrh7iZRIWEkSnRGEG-3OUhaB9_JCzvrcJJLD5qNz-n4s8PYYHq4jS27fjgUS6n0PxivYpI/s640/Chalky+paint+upholstered+chair+grey+wingback+%25284%2529.jpg" width="358" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After 1 coat of paint, I let it air dry overnight, then sanded the entire surface lightly, focusing more on the rough areas. I tried to avoid sanding the corners and piping too roughly, because the paint is more likely to rub off in those areas. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQRq98wDVaqdVBihoWwFY_r0JTPB5YZh9diJTs0_bYqfqQPEWlDeUqB4ULRHW1ozgOydJsbwjMAaBZWmPSmWXSzqWKHdgerQ6UpZZ9jBGIhMt3qzQXPRKicEygkB9fjAmBNXeTCjMVKUg/s1600/Chalky+paint+upholstered+chair+grey+wingback+%25287%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQRq98wDVaqdVBihoWwFY_r0JTPB5YZh9diJTs0_bYqfqQPEWlDeUqB4ULRHW1ozgOydJsbwjMAaBZWmPSmWXSzqWKHdgerQ6UpZZ9jBGIhMt3qzQXPRKicEygkB9fjAmBNXeTCjMVKUg/s640/Chalky+paint+upholstered+chair+grey+wingback+%25287%2529.jpg" width="356" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I applied a 2nd coat of chalky paint and let it air dry, then sanded it lightly again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnRrj1MiT-JP5kvfiUqX1wRFZ5EcXfSwJcwDHRU-QnD6U1s73Zi1Oy6FklVIp8v4QnZr0x4J4_4HcAiwXqfGCAni8BXOt_5M3lNQj64dv8tSuTrmpcuV8CTpvZR-VAwNkmXrk1BW3NCt0/s1600/Chalky+paint+chair2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="512" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnRrj1MiT-JP5kvfiUqX1wRFZ5EcXfSwJcwDHRU-QnD6U1s73Zi1Oy6FklVIp8v4QnZr0x4J4_4HcAiwXqfGCAni8BXOt_5M3lNQj64dv8tSuTrmpcuV8CTpvZR-VAwNkmXrk1BW3NCt0/s640/Chalky+paint+chair2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also painted the legs black with a foam brush and 2 coats of acrylic black paint, because the original legs had a few chips/scratches that I wanted to cover up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji6-JbpAvCmJKDlM8rUva2XXN3BoU5_4S7V3JJ7bXoR7Ddq5y1Iz3f9x9O-4S_fGUaI7xKERfhb82dqKeSPmWOMXVJizolq1uthic4KJ6ay4l0mljXtMK9zqlf6l2CIFgWirdEzLYBw84/s1600/Chalky+paint+upholstered+chair+grey+wingback+%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji6-JbpAvCmJKDlM8rUva2XXN3BoU5_4S7V3JJ7bXoR7Ddq5y1Iz3f9x9O-4S_fGUaI7xKERfhb82dqKeSPmWOMXVJizolq1uthic4KJ6ay4l0mljXtMK9zqlf6l2CIFgWirdEzLYBw84/s640/Chalky+paint+upholstered+chair+grey+wingback+%25281%2529.jpg" width="376" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The finished product! I did use a hairdryer to blow off chalk paint dust, but there wasn't much residue at all. This is an entertaining <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTD_l_LbCKQ" target="_blank">"Wiggle test" video</a> of how chalk paint, once dry, does not rub off on your clothes. </div>
Notes:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Sanding between coats of paint is crucial to softening the feel of the fabric. The final texture after painting the chair is still slightly rough. You can apply a coat of <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Americana-Decor-Creme-8-Ounce-Clear/dp/B00HQMDZHA/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1471227216&sr=8-5&keywords=annie+sloan+clear+wax" target="_blank">clear wax</a> after the chalk paint dries, to help with the rough texture.</li>
<li>If you chalk paint a chair that already has worn down fabric, the texture will be rougher than if </li>
<li>The more complex the texture (like a tweed chair), the more paint you'll need and the rougher the final texture. The original chevron pattern of the chair showed through a little at the end even with 2 coats of paint.</li>
<li>If I did this again I would apply the coats of paint more evenly, because there were a few streaky areas after the 2nd coat dried. I'd also buy this <a href="https://www.amazon.com/1st-Place-Chalk-Paint-Bristle/dp/B01C9S3VRE/ref=sr_1_sc_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1471227139&sr=8-3-spell&keywords=annie+sloan+painbrush" target="_blank">chalk paint round bristle brush</a> to help the paint absorb better</li>
</ul>

<br /></div>
<div>
For Luke's 1st birthday party banner, my friend Brittany went with a nautical/ocean theme. She found some awesome nautical rope from Joann's to go with the burlap banner. I cut 6-inch diameter scalloped circles using my Cricut machine. The font is from the "Don Juan" cartridge, and the whale and the anchor are both from the "Wild Card 2" cartridge. We used gluesticks to attach the letters (cut from scrapbook paper) onto the heavier cardstock backing. I love the color scheme Brittany ended up choosing! If you look closely you can see that some of the letters were cut out with scrapbook paper with an adorable anchor pattern.</div>

<br />
Next, the "ONE" banner on burlap. I cut cardstock letters with my Cricut machine and we used Elmer's glue to attach it to the burlap, which we cut out in bunting shapes.<br />

Reminds me of pink lemonade! My favorite part was the shimmery gold cardstock I found at Michaels. </div>

Apparently Kansas has lots of chalk rock limestone and KU fans chant "Rock Chalk, Jayhawk" during sports games.<br />
<br />
My friend requested a baby card for two of her close KU Jayhawks parents. She showed me around KU's campus a few years ago when I was doing a clinical rotation in Topeka and for her wedding ceremony a year later. It's a beautiful (and big!) campus with lots of greenery.<br />
<br />
Despite my sadly minimal knowledge of college sports, I DO know that KU's basketball team is pretty amazing! I included hints of yellow/crimson/navy to match KU's colors and to welcome a new baby Jayhawk into the world!<br />

A few months ago my friend asked me to make a quilled Golden Gate bridge for her first wedding anniversary. They had their honeymoon in SF last year and they loved it so much that they are going back to California again this summer! Since it was their first wedding anniversary, they decided to follow the <a href="https://www.azazie.com/blog/%E2%80%8Bwedding-anniversary-ideas-for-every-year">wedding anniversary tradition</a> of gifting something made of paper. I made a similar <a href="http://doleenoted.blogspot.com/2015/05/framed-quilling-golden-gate-bridge.html" target="_blank">quilled project</a> last year for my sister and decided to make one for them too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I drew out the Golden Gate bridge first and shaped the numbers first. Many episodes of Gilmore Girls were watched while waiting for each piece to dry.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy0odRupK90LWqgUAjhrU6vei9jp-YKkcJhKik2JsSZa0FaXYvFlKyZe9aUvrNxuiTdnvJcQqhvAM1Zpd7TnVRf_E68ZKvvIyE_psVQI79B-T4AzSFB5XOzymFX-NCn4TDfF2L4Qi1DQ4/s1600/quilled+golden+gate+bridge+anniversary+paper+gift+%25284%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy0odRupK90LWqgUAjhrU6vei9jp-YKkcJhKik2JsSZa0FaXYvFlKyZe9aUvrNxuiTdnvJcQqhvAM1Zpd7TnVRf_E68ZKvvIyE_psVQI79B-T4AzSFB5XOzymFX-NCn4TDfF2L4Qi1DQ4/s640/quilled+golden+gate+bridge+anniversary+paper+gift+%25284%2529.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
After the structure of the bridge was finished, I started adding the ocean "waves" around the wedding date to make it really pop.<br />

Lastly I framed it in a shadowbox from Michaels. At this point I'm now on the last season of Gilmore Girls! I'm happy with how the numbers turned out because I haven't tried numbers before. This framed quilling will be hung up on a gallery wall along my friend's staircase and I can't wait to see how it looks with all the other photos she printed of her honeymoon in San Francisco!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com17tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5071179007330259892.post-1774301324879849302016-04-21T18:33:00.005-04:002016-04-21T18:33:48.760-04:00April blooms and birthdaysLast year I planted iris bulbs from my coworker's yard, and after 14 months of waiting....they bloomed this month! It's so lovely to come back home to these colorful flowers. The colorful petals seem to open and close more depending on the time of the day, and the earliest bloomers have shriveled up and new ones are catching up and blooming now.<br />

I also made a few April birthday cards this month:</div>

About 5 years ago, I met the Macaron Whisperer, also known as Amrita, after eagerly perusing all of her wonderful dessert and food recipes at her blog, <a href="http://www.thesweetart.com/" target="_blank">The Sweet Art</a> and generally being a fangirl. I loved being her neighbor and how it meant long walks at Forest Park with her dog Mila, eating the leftover macarons from her dessert <a href="http://www.milasweets.com/" target="_blank">business</a>, taste-testing desserts like <a href="http://www.thesweetart.com/2014/01/shrikhand-shree-kund-indian-dessert.html" target="_blank">Shrikhand</a>, <a href="http://www.thesweetart.com/2013/10/oreo-ice-cream-swirled-with-chocolate.html" target="_blank">Oreo ice cream</a> (I love ALL her ice creams), <a href="http://www.thesweetart.com/2013/10/earl-grey-cardamom-pound-cake.html" target="_blank">Earl Grey Cardamom Pound Cake</a>, and <a href="http://www.thesweetart.com/2012/10/clementine-cake-wchocolate-ganache.html" target="_blank">Clementine Cake with Chocolate Ganache</a>, and doing Wii Just Dance in her apartment (to work off calories from eating all her desserts). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fast-forward to the present: we sadly no longer live across the street from Amrita & Joe, but they happen to be visiting NC this weekend to throw a baby shower for a friend! She needed a banner to fit her Under the Sea theme so I put my new Cricut machine to use. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Amrita purchased the sea creature graphics from Etsy, and I bought the Kraft paper and cardstock at Michaels. I used my Cricut machine to cut scalloped 6-inch circles and 5-inch patterned/color cardstock, which has little fishies in the background. I then cut letters out of navy cardstock and adhered everything together with double-sided tape. To hang the banner up, I strung twine through the holepunched circles and taped it all into place in the back of each circle, so that the space between each circle is uniform.</div>

Tomorrow our church is having a farewell party for our worship pastor and his family, who is transitioning to a new position and moving away from NC. I used my Cricut machine to cut out the music note for this farewell card. His family and worship ministry will be greatly missed! </div>

We also stopped by a couple of new additions to St. Louis that arrived after we left: IKEA, Jeni's Ice Cream, and <a href="http://lonaslileats.com/" target="_blank">Lonas Lil Eats</a>. It was the best way to spend 3 short days in St. Louis!<br />
<br />
B & T were our amazing hosts and fed us/cooked for us/drove us and let us play with their adorable kids! B ordered a custom quote of Joshua 24:15 embellished with quilling, inspired by a <a href="http://doleenoted.blogspot.com/2015/05/framed-quilling-and-brushlettering.html">previous projec</a>t. I hand-carried the framed print onto the plane and was quite relieved when I was able to deliver it safely to St. Louis. This was another collaboration between <a href="http://www.karmomo.com/" target="_blank">Karmomo</a> (the brushlettering) and me (<a href="http://doleenoted.blogspot.com/2015/05/framed-quilling-golden-gate-bridge.html" target="_blank">quilling</a>).<br />

This meant clearing out all the paper and pens and markers and half-finished craft projects invading his side of our shared table area.<br />
<br />
In the process of organizing and labeling everything, I decided to jazz up my pen/pencil cup organizers with gold and white chevron leftover wrapping paper. This was literally the easiest less-than-5-minute DIY project ever and I would do it again a heartbeat!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

They ordered 4 greeting cards from me this week and I finished them just in time for my trip to New Orleans. I used my new Cricut Expression 2 machine to cut out the Scottish terriors, banner, baby carriage, and to stencil out letters. My learning curve is still pretty steep right now and I'm spending more time choosing and designing the cuts than it takes for the machine to actually make the cut. I'm loving the crisp edges of the machine cuts though!<div>

</div>
My neighbor recently gifted me an old Cricut machine--the Expression 2 model, to be exact, because she bought the Explore and no longer needed this one. It's probably one of the most generous gifts I've ever received! Having used a Silhouette machine before, the Cricut Expression 2 is less flexible because it's only compatible with Craft Room software, which requires that you buy the whole set of images in each cartridge (about $10 per set). Whereas Design Space, which is compatible with the newest Cricut model, Explore, allows you to just buy single images (99 cents) and to create your own too. In any case, I'm happy to have any paper-cutting machine to cut out intricate designs like the bulldog below!<br />
<br />
My coworker asked me to make this card for her sister, whose English bulldog recently passed away. While Googling images of English bulldogs, I came across really adorable pictures of baby English bulldogs! Only bulldogs can make wrinkles look so cute.<br />

It's been awhile since I've posted! With Andrew on an away rotation for his residency, it's actually been harder to stay motivated, eat something besides frozen pizza for dinner, exercise and blog more regularly. This past week my neighbor took me under her wing and taught me how to knit and how to make organize handmade soap. That gave me the little kick I needed to get going on some craft projects! P.S. I now have newfound respect for anyone who knits because it took me FOREVER to knit 4 rows...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I recently made a twine-wrapped monogram wreath for a friend who just bought a new house. Surprisingly, wrapping the twine around the cardboard took longer than I expected. I finished playing 3 Settlers games while hot-gluing the twine to the letter. My husband pointed out that I trailed small bits of dried hot glue all over the Settlers game pieces. Oops. And sometimes I was in the middle of wrapping the twine, when it was my turn to roll the dice for my turn. Needless to say, Andrew ended up rolling the dice a lot for me.</div>

MATERIALS<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>cardboard cut into a letter shape (or you can <a href="http://amzn.to/23RNtPY" target="_blank">buy the letter already pre-cut</a>)</li>
<li>scissors or Exacto knife</li>
<li>hot glue gun</li>
<li><a href="http://amzn.to/23ROfMU" target="_blank">twine</a> (I think I ended up using about 30-40 feet of twine)</li>
<li>OPTIONAL: ribbon, felt or other embellishments</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0I8YW76uUgR4axPDlNVxmbnStxLMVTNasfYGTgs4CRi69w8lqlKDcHwerhMu36fOM1Q17BatR0hLPW5k6yr8sq4nDRHOppmzmwvVGHM2tyv8f1lCK7C6jAKsFfLwwSWR-ZukbS3CrU6s/s1600/IMG_5982.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0I8YW76uUgR4axPDlNVxmbnStxLMVTNasfYGTgs4CRi69w8lqlKDcHwerhMu36fOM1Q17BatR0hLPW5k6yr8sq4nDRHOppmzmwvVGHM2tyv8f1lCK7C6jAKsFfLwwSWR-ZukbS3CrU6s/s640/IMG_5982.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
Measure ribbon for a strap to hang the letter onto the door hook, and a piece of ribbon to tie into a bow.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
First wrap the horizontal edges of the letter (in the upper right photo above), so that the finished product won't have gaping holes of cardboard peeking through the twine. I squeezed a drop of hot glue, then immediately pressed the twine down, zigzagged the twine to the other side of the letter, put a drop of hot glue, and repeat until the entire edge is done. Cut the twine and repeat on the next edge. Then, I started wrapping horizontally and covered up the edges. I found that putting a thin line of hot glue held the twine down the best. Hot glue and wrap twine around and around the cardboard until it's completely covered.</div>

<br />
<ul>
<li>To make a bow, make a circle out of the satin ribbon and glue together. </li>
<li>Pinch satin ribbon in the middle, and glue a small band around the middle to secure. </li>
<li>Tie a knot in a long ribbon to form the straps for the wreath to hang on.</li>
<li>Hot glue the bow to the straps, and then hot glue the straps to the twine letter monogram.</li>
</ul>
<div>
And that's it! Your very own twine/jute-wrapped monogram wreath. I embellished it with another bow and flowers, but you can also just leave it like it is. I used <a href="http://www.littlethingsbringsmiles.com/2010/12/felt-fun.html" target="_blank">this tutorial</a> to make the little felt flowers.</div>

<br />
I was worried that the letters would turn out all shaky or crooked but am pleased with the final result! K had mentioned that the combination of embroidery with calligraphy has been a rising trend this year. I've been practicing brushlettering with brushes, <a href="http://amzn.to/1Pvir6e" target="_blank">Tombow dual pens</a>, and Daiso pens recently, and Andrew also gifted me with this <a href="http://amzn.to/1PviwXK" target="_blank">calligraphy set</a> that I'm excited to try out soon.<br />

When I asked my sister what she wanted for Christmas, she told me, "anything you make!" She is my biggest fan and I love her for it! I decided to make her a personalized wood slice ornament because she really liked the <a href="http://doleenoted.blogspot.com/2015/10/diy-tutorial-wood-branch-slice.html" target="_blank">monogram wood slice coasters</a> I made for my brother-in-law.<br />

<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<br />
Materials used:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://amzn.to/1Rdt7wt" target="_blank">wood slice</a></li>
<li>ribbon</li>
<li><a href="http://amzn.to/22HZp6l" target="_blank">brush marker</a> (I used a regular paintbrush and white acrylic paint for the "grace" ornament). My sister gifted me with a whole set of <a href="http://amzn.to/22HZMxX" target="_blank">Tombow Dual brush pens</a> for Christmas and they are great for brush calligraphy beginners like me! </li>
<li><a href="http://amzn.to/1RdsXW2" target="_blank">Modpodge in Matte</a></li>
<li><a href="http://amzn.to/22HZze3" target="_blank">DuraClear Varnish</a></li>
</ul>
<div>
See <a href="http://doleenoted.blogspot.com/2015/10/diy-tutorial-wood-branch-slice.html" target="_blank">this tutorial</a> for instructions. The only extra step included drilling a hole for the ribbon to go through the log slice. </div>

My friend Steven has a delightful family tradition where his entire family brings the Christmas cards they received each winter and vote on the best Christmas card. They give out prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and the kids get to vote too! I entered the contest a few years ago and ended up winning 2nd place with this quilled Christmas tree card.<br />
